PERINEAL SUTURING COURSE

Norwich

22nd of June 2019

University of East Anglia

Available

Why are we offering this course?

Because I have heard so many times from a woman in labour this… “The stitches hurt me a lot”.

Because I´ve been told “sometimes when you see a tear you don´t even know where to start” I also heard it.

Because after defeating a cervix cancer the vagina became a universe to re-explore.

INSTRUCTOR

Hello, my name is Shahla Bakhtiarui and I am a vocational midwife with 30 years of experience in the delivery and care of birthing women. My professional focus and expertise is in suturing and perineal care.

I am originally from Iran and worked in the Middle East in the Ministry of health from 1989 to 2002. During this time I was responsible for the organisation and opening of 7 maternity units in Iran In 1995, I was the director of the family planning project for UNFPA (United Nations Fund for Population Activities), a subsidiary body of the United Nations General Assembly which is responsible for reproductive health, development and gender equality..

My passion for research, which I share with my husband, brought us to the UK in 2002, and in Manchester I volunteered with refugee women and was later hired as a midwife at Central Manchester University Hospital.

In 2004 I began my work as a midwife at Cambridge University Hospitals. My keen interest in perineal health led me to achieve my Master’s degree from the University of Salford in Manchester. My thesis was entitled “Prevention of perineal tears during vaginal delivery.”

I am currently working as a midwife specialising in the OASIS (Obstetric Anal Sphincter Injuries) program.

We are a team of professionals consisting of physiotherapists, obstetricians and midwives working on a national level. Together we carry out research and publish internationally in prestigious magazines on the subject of anal sphincter injuries.

Within the clinical unit and consultation of OASIS, I assign specialised care to women who have suffered third and fourth degree perineal tears, offering strategies to improve their quality of life. I regularly participate in conferences throughout England, teaching the role of the midwife in the prevention of these tears.

I am also the current director of training for ‘continuing practice of perineal suturing’ for teams of midwives, gynaecologists and obstetricians.

At present I teach the latest technique of continuous suture “not locking” which has proven to be the most favourable for women, the professional who gives care and hospital providing care.

The perineal suture is a true art and every midwife should keep their skills updated. I am very excited to be able to teach in Oxford and Norwich with this masterful Course of ‘Perineal Suture Updated’.
